British Bulldog

Stoic, gentle companion with a courageous heart and distinctive appearance

The British Bulldog is a distinctive breed known for its loose, wrinkled skin, pushed-in nose, and characteristic rolling gait. Despite their fierce appearance stemming from their bull-baiting ancestry, modern Bulldogs are gentle, affectionate companions with a stoic nature. They form strong bonds with their families and make excellent, though sometimes stubborn, household pets.

Origin & History

Bulldogs were developed from Mastiffs and acquired their name around 1630. Originally bred for the sport of bull baiting, which was popular in England for more than 700 years before being made illegal in 1850. The tremendous upswept jaw with a broad nose set back almost between the eyes was developed so the Bulldog could breathe while hanging on to its opponent's neck. Today's Bulldog is more heavily built and less athletic than its ancestors.

Physical Characteristics

British Bulldogs have a distinctive, heavy-set build with massive heads and powerful jaws. A healthy female typically weighs about 20kg and stands 30cm tall, while males weigh around 25kg and reach 38cm in height. They feature loose, wrinkled skin, a pushed-in nose, and a characteristic rolling gait. Their smooth coat comes in various colors including brindle, white, red, and fawn.

Health & Lifespan

Bulldogs typically live 8-10 years with proper care. They are prone to certain breed-specific health issues including breathing difficulties due to their brachycephalic nature, hip dysplasia, skin infections in their wrinkles, and heat sensitivity. Regular veterinary care and proper maintenance of their unique physical features are essential for their wellbeing.

Temperament

The British Bulldog is usually placid and gentle but can be jealously territorial around what it regards as 'its own'. While its appearance serves as a deterrent to intruders, it certainly has courage when called upon to defend its property. Bulldogs enjoy their owner's company and display a loving nature at every opportunity. They are stoic to a fault and make excellent family pets when properly trained from puppyhood.

Care Requirements

Bulldogs require specific daily care. Facial folds need cleaning daily with cotton wool, applying petroleum jelly to create a barrier against tear stains and prevent chafing. The area under the tail root requires similar attention. Daily five-minute brushing and wiping with a damp flannel maintains their coat. Toenails, especially dewclaws, should be inspected weekly. Avoid cooked bones and ensure fresh water is always available.

Living Conditions

Bulldogs are indoor dogs that thrive in climate-controlled environments. They are sensitive to temperature extremes, particularly heat, and should be kept in comfortable temperatures at all times. Most get along with other dogs, though some individuals may not care to share their home comforts with other species. Early introduction to cats is advisable for better compatibility.

Important Health Note

Agitation, particularly during hot weather, can prove fatal for Bulldogs. Their build determines they are not dogs to be vigorously exercised but should always be maintained in top muscular tone. A daily walk around the block suffices for exercise, preferably early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.

Ideal Owners

Recommended for sensible and sensitive owners who understand the breed's needs. Very young children need to be taught to respect the animal and its requirements. Bulldogs are not suitable for exercise by frail individuals, as the breed can be quite rambunctious despite their generally placid nature.

Training & Socialization

As with all animals, training and kind discipline should begin at eight weeks. If a puppy is not discouraged when it jumps up on its owner, it will not be its fault if it becomes a nuisance later. Proper early training ensures a well-behaved companion that repays care with years of devotion.
